Manchester, England – The Boston Globe and National Geographic Traveler magazine are the top winners in the 23rd annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition.

The Chicago Tribune and Minneapolis Star Tribune each won four awards, the Portland Oregonian three and the Miami Herald and Los Angeles Times two each. The Los Angeles Times earned the gold for Best Newspaper Travel Section with a circulation of at least 500,000.

Among magazines, National Geographic Traveler won five awards, including the gold for Best Travel Magazine. National Geographic Adventure took five awards and Outside earned four. Travel + Leisure and Departures each won three.

The contest is overseen by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (www.satwf.com

The competition for work from spring 2006 to spring 2007 drew a record 1,490 entries in 27 categories. The awards, recognized as the most prestigious honors in travel journalism, were announced Oct. 8 in Manchester, England, at the annual convention of the Society of American Travel Writers, the professional organization of travel writers and communicators.

As Travel Journalist of the Year, Haines will receive $1,500. Judges lauded Haines for his skill for detail and elegant style.  Also in the grand-award category, the silver went to Alan Solomon of the Chicago Tribune and bronze to Rosemary McClure of the Los Angeles Times.

“Our goal is to recognize and reward the best of travel journalism in magazines, newspapers and on the Internet,” said David Molyneaux, president of the SATW Foundation and editor of
www.TravelMavens.net.  “The Internet continues to play a larger role in quality travel journalism each year. This year, two of the three awards for service-oriented consumer articles came from Web sites.”
